Assessment of two medicinal plants, Psidium guajava L. and Achillea millefolium L., in in vitro and in vivo assays Genet. Mol. Biol.
Teixeira,Rosangela de Oliveira; Camparoto,Marjori Leiva; Mantovani,Mário Sérgio; Vicentini,Veronica Elisa Pimenta.
The use of medicinal plants by the general population is an old and still widespread practice, which makes studies of their genotoxicity essential. Psidium guajava L. and Achillea millefolium L. are examples of plants commonly used in popular medicine. P. guajava L. is indicated for diarrhea and also as an antiseptic, while A. millefolium L. is indicated as an analgesic, antispasmodic, digestive, diuretic, antiseptic, astringent, emollient, wound healer and hemorrhoid medication. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of the infusions of these two plant species on chromosomes and the cell cycle. Leaves from the plants were used to prepare infusions, in the same manner as teas, but at two different concentrations. Allium cepa L. root-tip cells...

Carbonized rice husk as an alternative substrate for Ocimum basilicum L. seedling production Acta Agron. (Palmira)
Salé,Mussa Mamudo; Pereira,Aline Soares; Lange Junior,Hélio; Neutzling,Cristiane; Marques dos Santos,Patricia; Schiedeck,Gustavo; Severo Dorneles,Athos Odin.
Abstract The substrate used in seedling production plays a major role in the initial plant development. In this sense, the objective was to evaluate the emergence capacity and establishment of basil seedlings in different proportions of alternative substrates based on charred rice husk and commercial substrate S10®. The experiment was carried out in expanded polyethylene trays, using basil seeds (Horticeres seeds®), which lasted 28 days. The experimental design was completely randomized, with five treatments (T1: 100 % commercial substrate (BCS); T2: 80 % BCS + 20 % Charred rice husk (CRH); T3: 60 % BCS + 40 % CRH; T4: 40 % BCS + 60 % CRH; T5: 20 % BCS + 80 % CRH) and three repetitions. Were evaluated leaf number, shoot length, root length, root dry mass,...

Effects of Maytenus ilicifolia Mart. and Bauhinia candicans Benth infusions on onion root-tip and rat bone-marrow cells Genet. Mol. Biol.
Camparoto,Marjori Leiva; Teixeira,Rosangela de Oliveira; Mantovani,Mário Sérgio; Vicentini,Veronica Elisa Pimenta.
Medicinal plants are widely used to treat various diseases, and in Brazil the plants Maytenus ilicifolia Mart. and Bauhinia candicans Benth are commonly used in popular medicine. However, there are a large number of compounds in plants which can produce alterations in genetic material, and this study was conducted to investigate any possible mutagenic and cytotoxic effects that M. ilicifolia and B. candicans infusions may have on the cell cycle and chromosomes. Infusions were prepared with in natura leaves to give two concentrations of infusions, one at the concentration normally used by the population in general and the other at 10 times this value (i.e. 3.5 and 35 mg/mL for M. ilicifolia and 0.465 and 4.65 mg/mL for B. candicans). Onion (Allium cepa L.)...

Possibility of using neural networks for moisture ratio prediction in dried potatoes by means of different drying methods and evaluating physicochemical properties CIGR Journal
Yaghoubi, Marjan; Askari, Bijan; Mokhtarian, Mohsen; Tavakolipour, Hamid; Elhami Rad, Amirhosein; Jafarpour, Afshin; Heidarian, Soodabeh.
Potato cubes were dried by different drying methods.  After the end of drying process, the experimental data were first fitted to the four well-known drying models.  The results indicated that the logarithmic and page models performed better compared with the other models.  Also, in this study neural networks were used in order to possibly predict dried potato moisture ratio (y), based on three input variables of drying time, drying temperature and different methods.  The results revealed that, logsig function based on 10 neurons in the first hidden layer could perform as the best goodness configuration for predicting the moisture ratio.  The comparison of the obtained results of ANNs and classical modeling indicated that, the neural networks have a higher...

Solid-liquid extraction of sorrel calyces with ethanol CIGR Journal
Olawale, Adegboyega Surajudeen.
Ethanol extraction of three particle size distributions of sorrel (Hibiscus sabdariffa) calyces was investigated.  Extraction rate was found to increase with reduced particle size, increased temperature and solvent mass (solvent-feed ratio).  At 30oC, maximum yield or concentration was achieved with 50:1 solvent-feed ratio but no substantial increment occurred in these parameters beyond 20:1 ratio.  No degradation of the extract’s components occurred between 27oC and 70oC since linear relation between extraction yield and temperature was sustained.  Peleg equation and a variant of it gave the best fit for extraction kinetics.  The smallest calyx particles (
